An Electrifying Soul
The 2020 Kia Soul already wows everyone who drives it. Somehow, Kia isn’t stymied by its success and continues to innovate its vehicles to new heights. Its most recent project? Make the 2020 Kia Soul an electric vehicle. With the introduction of the 2020 Kia Soul EV, we can safely say the people at Kia achieved their goal and then some. This electric subcompact SUV tops its class, and nothing stands in its way to take over the market.
An Inspiring Electric Engine
Creating an electric motor that competes with the best is a difficult task. Luckily, Kia dedicated some of the world’s finest engineers to the job, and they’ve been graced with outstanding results.
The heartbeat of the 2020 Kia Soul EV is an electric motor designed to impress. With 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque, this electric motor outperforms many gas engines powering cars for this model year. To compare, the 2019 Nissan Leaf Plus packs 214 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV produces 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. This engine makes the 2020 Kia Soul EV the most efficient Soul model ever with an EPA-estimated 127/101 mpg city/highway MPGe.
Kia’s engineers thought outside of the box for this engine. Instead of pairing the engine to a transmission, the 2020 Soul EV electric vehicle pairs the engine to a gear-reduction unit, which transfers power directly to the wheels. This feature gives this subcompact SUV uniquely zippy acceleration, which is an edge over nearly every vehicle in its class.
Every electric motor has a battery, and every battery needs to be charged. The 2020 Kia Soul is outfitted to be charged from 120-volt, 240-volt and DC fast-charge power sources. A 120-volt power source gives you a full charge in about 20 hours. However, a 240-volt power source can charge the battery in about 9.5 hours, making for easy overnight charging. Blowing away the other options, the DC fast charger can charge the battery to 80% in about 1 hour.
The 2020 Kia Soul EV can interestingly charge itself while you drive, specifically when you brake. When you brake in most cars, you’re wasting a lot of kinetic energy. Not in this vehicle. Instead of losing kinetic energy when you brake, it converts it into electricity that charges your battery. This means you have to charge your battery less frequently than you would with other vehicles. It’s a contributing factor to the 2020 Kia Soul’s range of 243 miles.
