How to Check Oil on a Kia

Checking oil level on dipstick

Without sufficient motor oil, your vehicle’s engine will accumulate wear and tear at an accelerated rate—and if the level drops too low, even normal driving can cause catastrophic and irreversible damage. That’s why every single driver should know how to check the oil level in their car! If you’ve ever used a dipstick, then you already know how to check the oil on a Kia. We’ve laid out the steps, so you can keep your vehicle performing at its best.

Checking Kia Car Oil with a Dipstick

In order to ensure that you get an accurate reading, prepare for the test by taking these steps:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground.
  2. Start the engine, and let it run until it reaches a normal operating temperature. This shouldn’t take long.
  3. Turn the engine off. Wait roughly 15 minutes.

Now that the oil has settled back into the pan, you’re ready to check your Kia car’s oil:

  1. Open the hood and locate the dipstick. (It should be right next to your engine, but you can check your owner’s manual if you’re not sure where to look.)
  2. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a lint-free rag that won’t leave any residue.
  3. Reinsert the dipstick, and retrieve it once again.
  4. Identify the minimum and maximum lines on your dipstick. If your level doesn’t fall in between these markings, you’ll need to add more oil.

If you need to add more motor oil, check your owner’s manual to ensure that you’re using the proper type. If you’re not sure, give us a call or visit our parts department for assistance. It’s a good idea to use a funnel to eliminate spills, but adding oil is as simple as removing the cap and pouring more into the reservoir, little by little. Check the level as you go, and be sure not to overfill.

It’s natural for oil levels to deplete over time, but if you seem to be losing oil quickly, a leak might be to blame. You don’t want to get caught on the highways of Shelby or Ashland without sufficient oil, so schedule service and let us take a look.
